Portfolio Day 32

Portfolio Day at ESPM is a biannual event where 6th-semester Design students present their portfolios. Each edition features a unique visual identity that changes from semester to semester. This identity is used to promote the event through Instagram posts and graphic materials, the poster serving as the main piece.

Design is a blend of ideas, processes, experiences, materials, techniques, and forms. The portfolios reflect this in every detail of each student; and so should the visual identity. Design often follows a non-linear creative process, with unique and varied starting points for each project.

Discarded materials, on the verge of being thrown away, were the starting point for the creation. Wooden and fabric panels were reimagined with spray paint, cutting, and laser engraving.

As the Designer and Creative Lead behind the identity for the 32nd edition of Portfolio Day, I envisioned Design as a fusion of ideas, processes, and techniques — reflecting the diversity found in the students’ portfolios.

For the creation of the identity, with the poster as the focal point, we wanted the graphic pieces to stand out in terms of materiality. This was approached as both a challenge and an extension of the visual expression of the project.

The decision was made to recycle ideas by using found wooden panels and fabric, transformed through laser engraving, stenciling, and spray techniques. The application of linseed oil highlighted the natural grain of the wood and intensified its tone, giving it a refined finish.

This diversity of techniques and materiality in Portfolio Day perfectly reflects the essence of the event: Design students explore different methods, materials, and experiments in their portfolios, and the poster itself embodies this spirit.
